The quote is often attributed to Harriet Tubman, the black American abolitionist, however some historian dispute its authenticity. For the purpose of this blog, we will use it because it is appropriate under the circumstances: “I freed a thousand slaves I could have freed a thousand more if only they knew they were slaves.” What does this powerful quote mean?

What this quote indicates is that when people are being oppressed and stifled, these enslaved people can decide to resist their condition in countless ways, without being led by anybody; even if powerful forces are arrayed against them. Others would not try to attain their freedom, either because they don’t want to, or because they do not know that they are oppressed, because they have gotten accustomed to their situation of oppressed people and have developed a reflex of tacit consent that is causing them to say that in the absence of a liberating messiah, the best thing is to not do anything.

In Gabon, those who are writing to us asking what Jean Ping must do to liberate Gabon, are like those looking for a messiah. Activists fighting for freedom should promote the spreading of knowledge, self-awareness, education, and a willingness to actively dissent.

Indeed, all those who are waiting for Ping to free them, do they actually want to be free? If so, what are they doing to prepare to facilitate this freedom?

History proves to us that the people who have become liberated have generally done this by themselves, and not because a messiah came to liberate them. The first form of liberation is for the people to extricate themselves from the unbearable conditions they live. In the Gabonese context, it amounts to throwing away everything related to Ali Bongo. The second is for the people to behave as free people within the country, which is to say to assume their freedom, despite the repression. This is what our martyrs of 2016 did, is what our resistants in Gabon and the diaspora are doing. They live their freedom in the present, without compromise and without fear. They do not sell their servitude to the highest bidder. Finally, there are revolts, during which people go to confront the oppressors. In this case, the leader emanates from the people and not the other way round. This was the case for Toussaint L'Ouverture in Haiti, or Mandela with the ANC in South Africa. It is the thirst for liberation of peoples that gives birth to liberating leaders. Waiting for the messiah is a way of doing nothing!

La citation est attribuée à Harriet Tubman, cette abolitionniste noire Américaine, quoique des historiens mettent en doute son authenticité. Ce blog s’en sert parce que la citation en question est appropriée en la circonstance : « J'ai libéré 1000 esclaves. J'aurais pu en libérer des milliers d'autres s'ils savaient qu'ils étaient des esclaves ». Que signifie cette puissante phrase ?

Ce que cette citation indique, c'est que lorsque les gens sont opprimés et étouffés, ces personnes asservies peuvent décider de résister à leur condition, d'innombrables manières ; sans être dirigées par qui que ce soit; même s’il y a de puissantes forces rangées contre eux. D'autres n'essaieront pas d'obtenir leur liberté, soit parce qu'ils ne le veulent pas, soit parce qu'ils ne savent pas qu'ils sont opprimés, car ils se sont habitués à leur situation d’opprimées et ont développé un réflexe de consentement tacite qui leur fait dire qu'en l'absence d'un messie libérateur, la meilleure chose est de ne rien faire.

En effet, tous ceux qui attendent que Ping les libère, veulent-ils seulement être libres ? Si oui, que font-ils pour se préparer à faciliter cette libération ?

L’histoire nous prouve que les peuples qui se sont libérés, l’on généralement fait d’eux-mêmes, et non parce qu’un messie est arrivé pour les libérer. La première forme de libération est pour le peuple de s’extirper des conditions insupportables qu’il vit. Dans le contexte Gabonais, cela revient à vomir tout ce qui a trait à Ali Bongo. Le seconde est pour le peuple de se comporter en personnes libres dans le pays, c’est-à-dire d’assumer sa liberté, malgré la répression. C’est ce qu’ont fait nos martyrs de 2016, c’est que font nos résistants du Gabon et de la diaspora. Ils vivent leur liberté au présent, sans compromission et sans peur aucune. Ils ne monnayent pas leur servitude au plus offrant. Il y a enfin les révoltes, pendant lesquelles les populations vont à l’affrontement avec les oppresseurs. Dans ce cas de figure, le leader émane du peuple et non l’inverse. Ce fut le cas pour Toussaint L’Ouverture en Haïti, ou Mandela avec l’ANC en Afrique du Sud. C’est la soif de libération des peuples qui enfante des leaders libérateurs. Attendre le messie est une façon de ne rien faire !
