Many opinions are heard on the pseudo opportunity that the dialogue organized by Ali Bongo could have offered, if and only if Jean Ping would have participated. An editorial in Gabonreview gives us the opportunity to provide our opinion on the issue.

For this blog, the idea of political dialogue, which in Gabon is mainly a political negotiation, may in principle be desirable; but given where the country is at the moment, we think that negotiating with Ali Bongo is a waste of time. Negotiating today with Ali Bongo will lead to nothing or almost nothing, except to reinforce him in his position of aggressor of the Gabonese people.

Going to negotiate with Ali Bongo means putting the nature of the regime deliberately in parentheses or on the back burner and claiming that it would respect the Gabonese people's right to freedom. So far, from Gabonese memory, all the so-called negotiations with the Bongo regime have resulted in a fool’s bargain, with no return other than the distribution of some positions to political beggars. The so-called Paris or Arambo agreements have led, de facto, to freezing the sphere of influence of the Gabonese people by limiting their sovereignty. These agreements have never dealt with or resolved substantive issues. They have never brought to the Gabonese people any guarantee of lasting freedom. In fact, these agreements have served only one purpose: to extend a regime guilty of all abuses against the Gabonese people.

Above all, we must remind everyone of a simple principle wanting that we must not negotiate with a dictator who has all the means to impose "his peace" and "his solution", for lack of a powerful opposition resolved to put an end to the tyranny. In this case, accepting a dialogue with a dictator is no longer a negotiation, but a capitulation. A negotiation cannot achieve a balanced result when one of the parties has already demonstrated in a tangible way that it can use force at any time to impose its will. Good negotiation is the result of a balance of power between the parties. A negotiation is only valid when both parties have an interest in compromise. But the Bongo regime has never had an interest in a viable compromise for the Gabonese people. For the moment we cannot trust Ali Bongo because he is ready to do anything to keep himself in power.

Dear readers, those who went to dialogue with Ali Bongo have simply capitulated, whatever they say to justify themselves. The first line of weakness in the face of dictatorship and imposture is to give up because one thinks that they cannot win.

To pretend to negotiate with Ali Bongo is to misunderstand the nature of his regime, yet very explicitly visible. His aggression against freedom in Gabon is systematic and physical. The repression against the defenders of Gabonese rights, from intimidation to assassination, is strengthened. Dismantling the opposition by funding parties or small groups that can undermine democratic values and the thirst for freedom within the opposition is his main objective.

To continue to pretend to negotiate with Ali Bongo is to put the ideals of freedom and those who spread them in Gabon, at a considerable risk. If we want to help the dissidents who are fighting against oppression, we have no right to strengthen this regime, by giving it everything it wants, by pretending to consider it as a responsible partner. It is for this reason that this blog thinks that we must reinforce the resistance, not relax it. Dear readers, to refuse to dialogue with Ali Bongo, is to honor victims and respect them, because by lending themselves to the so-called dialogue of this criminal, some allow themselves not only to ratify the right to massacre hundreds of our compatriots , but also to prevent any hope for the cessation of oppression. Ali Bongo's masquerades are unworthy and unbearable for us.

De nombreux sons de cloches se font entendre sur la pseudo opportunité qu’aurait pu offrir le dialogue organisé par Ali Bongo, si et seulement si Jean Ping y aurait participé. Un éditorial paru dans Gabonreview nous donne l’occasion de donner notre avis sur la question.

Pour ce blog, l’idée du dialogue politique, qui au Gabon est surtout une négociation politique, peut être en principe souhaitable; mais au point où en est le pays, nous pensons que négocier avec Ali Bongo soit une perte de temps. Négocier aujourd’hui avec Ali Bongo n’aboutira à rien ou presque, sauf à le conforter dans sa posture d’agresseur du peuple Gabonais.

Aller négocier avec Ali Bongo, c’est mettre volontairement entre parenthèses ou en veilleuse, la nature du régime et prétendre qu’il respecterait le droit des Gabonais à la liberté. Jusqu’ici, de mémoire de Gabonais, toutes les prétendues négociations avec le régime Bongo se sont soldées par un marché de dupes, sans contrepartie autre que la distribution de quelques strapontins aux mendiants politiques. Les accords dits de Paris, ou d’Arambo, ont conduit, de facto, à geler la sphère d’influence du peuple Gabonais en limitant sa souveraineté. Ces accords n’ont jamais traité ni réglé les questions de fond. Ils n’ont jamais apporté aux Gabonais aucune garantie de liberté durable. En fait, ces accords n’ont servi qu’à une chose : prolonger un régime coupable de tous les abus envers le peuple Gabonais.

Il faut surtout rappeler à tout le monde un principe simple voulant qu’on ne négocie pas avec un dictateur qui dispose de tous les moyens d’imposer « sa paix » et « sa solution », faute d’une contrepartie puissante en face, qui soit résolue à en finir coute que coute. Dans ce cas de figure, accepter de dialoguer avec un dictateur n’est plus une négociation, mais une capitulation. Une négociation ne peut aboutir à un résultat équilibré lorsqu’une des parties a déjà démontré de manière tangible qu’elle peut recourir à la force à tout moment pour imposer sa volonté. La bonne négociation est le résultat d’un rapport de forces entre les parties. Une négociation n’est valide que lorsque les deux parties ont intérêt à recourir à un compromis. Mais le régime Bongo n’a jamais eu intérêt à un compromis viable pour le peuple Gabonais. Pour l’instant on ne peut pas faire confiance à Ali Bongo car il est prêt à tout pour se maintenir au pouvoir.

Chers lecteurs, ceux qui sont allés dialoguer avec Ali Bongo ont simplement capitulé, quoiqu’ils disent pour se justifier. La première ligne de faiblesse face à la dictature et à l’imposture, c’est de baisser les bras car on pense qu’on ne peut pas gagner.

Prétendre négocier avec Ali Bongo revient à se méprendre sur la nature de son régime, pourtant bien explicitement visible. Son agression contre la liberté au Gabon, est systématique et physique. La répression contre les défenseurs des droits des Gabonais, de l’intimidation à l’assassinat, se renforce. Démanteler l’opposition en finançant des partis ou groupuscules pouvant saper les valeurs démocratiques et la soif de liberté au sein de l’opposition, est son principal objectif.

Continuer prétendre négocier avec Ali Bongo c’est faire courir aux idéaux de liberté et à ceux qui les propagent au Gabon, un risque considérable. Si nous voulons aider les dissidents qui luttent contre l’oppression, nous n’avons pas le droit de renforcer ce régime, en lui cédant tout, en faisant mine de le considérer comme un partenaire responsable. C’est pour cette raison que ce blog pense que nous devons renforcer la résistance, non pas la relâcher. Chers lecteurs, refuser de dialoguer avec Ali Bongo, c’est faire droit aux victimes et les respecter, car en se prêtant à des simulacres de négociation avec ce criminel, certains se permettent non seulement d’entériner le droit de massacrer des centaines de compatriotes, mais aussi d’empêcher tout espoir pour que cesse l’oppression. Les mascarades d’Ali Bongo sont indignes et insupportables pour nous.
