LET US MAKE ANDRÉ MBA OBAME’S FUNERALS COINCIDE WITH A NATIONAL AWAKENING. FAISONS COÏNCIDER LES FUNÉRAILLES D’ANDRÉ MBA OBAME AVEC UNE RENAISSANCE NATIONALE

English Version

The elimination of Andre Mba Obame is not a mere accident of history with no significant meaning, it is the clearest sign of the constancy of the modus operandi of those ruling Gabon who, unable to resolve the country's problems by the medium of rationality, are having to terrorize and eliminate anything that indicates independence of judgment and possibility of change. When Andre Mba Obame appeared at the 2009 presidential election on a popular platform against structural injustice, against people who wanted that Gabon remains in the hands of those who were clenching on their privileges to the point of confiscating to a people their country; he became a marked man for the regime!

In 2009, André Mba Obame had dared to take an open stand against the regime he had served for 25 years. Yet it would have been easier for him to fall into the ranks and continue to enjoy the largesse of the regime.

In 2009, he dared to publicly denounce acts of repression against the Gabonese people and attaqued the regime that was crushing them to protect the interests of a few. Yet all he had to do was to stay quiet and keep his privileges.

In 2009, he dared to come to the defense of thousands of impoverished Gabonese. He became the official spokesperson of the Gabonese people who wanted to be free. He had become a dangerous man who was not afraid to tell the truth. The death squad of the regime never forgave him. He was poisoned and had a long and painful illness from which he died on 12 April 2015.

Many were astonished at his "conversion" in 2009 and there were many people who swore that it was a ploy with Ali Bongo to weaken the opposition. What do these people think today? One is tempted to imagine that even while serving Omar Bongo, some as André Mba Obame had trouble maintaining a balance between, on the one hand, their commitment and devotion to a dictator; and on the other, their growing sensitivity for a defenseless people exploited by the regime they served. If André Mba Obame felt like that yesterday, there was a safe bet that other serving Ali Bongo today are disgusted by what they experience. Will they have the courage to do the same and break out? The conversion of Andre Mba Obame was for many Gabonese, an event marking a turning point in the country's political life. His death should not rhyme with the end of hope for a free future, for the dictatorship and lies are doomed to failure. Those who think that the massacre of democracy in Gabon, forty-five years after 1967, still has a bright future ahead, are resolutely wrong. Andre Mba Obame had understood this reality before the others and those who cling will experience the abrupt end of dictators.

The funeral of Andre Mba Obame could be the triggering event of a new citizen determination for genuine social and political change in Gabon. We must all be clearly on the side of the people and to denounce untiringly everything that appears to us as a reinforcement of the dictatorship. We must denounce all the injustices, we must stop the repression. Those who prefer to stick to the prudence of silence, should get out of their lethargy and join the liberation movement of Gabon that should intensify.

Today in Gabon, not to be on the people's side, is to betray our common destiny. Yes celebrate André Mba Obame, during his funeral with homilies; but what is more important is to consider that death in every culture is viewed as a transition from a physical condition has an immaterial state. Christians speak of the resurrection; African religions talk about the permanence of the dead among the living. If we want to say that Andre Mba Obame is with us, that he lives in us, this must be expressed through actions along the lines of ending the dictatorship. There is no doubt that a huge crowd will attend the funeral; but the most important thing will be what the crowd will do in the days, weeks and months that will follow the funeral. Once buried in his native Medouneu, this seed that fell on the field of battle, must give birth to the tree of the rebirth of Gabon, whose fruits will be the freedom that we will demand and will impose.
