We publish below the exclusive interview of Frantz Ossa Ossa printed by the website of the NGO Brainforest. You can read the original by clicking here.

Oldest complex life forms discovered in Gabon, Frantz Ossa Ossa reveals his truths.

The discovery was done entirely in the process of the thesis work of Frantz OSSA OSSA, Francis Mayaga Mikolo (Ministry of Mines) and Michel MBINA (University of Masuku). EL Albani would never have come to Gabon without Frantz OSSA OSSA’s thesis and would never have visited the site of Socoba if Frantz OSSA OSSA and Michel MBINA had not previously observed signs of life there. This discovery would not have become global if Frantz OSSA OSSA by his perseverance did not deepen his research after he returned to Poitiers. History should remember that this discovery is primarily Gabonese.

The Brainforest team went to meet the young Gabonese scientist who is outraged by remarks made by El Albani on Gabonese Television in October 2013.

Frantz Ossa Ossa tell us a little bit about yourself, where are you now and what are your research activities?

Firstly a big thank you to the site Brainforest for paying attention to my research activities and the special interest it has on the evolution of scientific research in Gabon and around the world.

Currently I have a position as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Johannesburg in South Africa. My research is mainly focused on the evolution of the early Earth and the impact on the metal distribution and the emergence of life. It is a research program conducted in collaboration with Caltech Institute, Yale University, University of California in the USA; University of Manitoba in Canada and Peking University in China.

Could you be more explicit?

Basically I am trying to bring a little more light on the evolution of atmospheric conditions in terms of levels of "free" oxygen during a very ancient period of the history of our planet Earth.

You know, oxygen is a very important element and its appearance in its "free form" on the surface of the Earth has probably resulted in irreversible changes among which we can mention:

The evolution of life, from the primitive and simple forms of life to more complex forms.
The chemical weathering of rocks, the layoff of metals and their redistribution to the surface of the Earth.
The mobilization and deposit of some minerals such as Iron, Manganese, and Uranium often depends on the redox conditions in their set up environment, "in summary, oxygen levels." You will understand by this that such a study is of paramount importance for mineral exploration because it will allow for a better prediction of the location of ore bodies or deposits.

Frantz Ossa Ossa I do not know if you have paid attention, but the Poitiers team led by Professor El Albani has made the headlines in Gabon lately, with the release of a documentary, an article in the scientific journal of the Academy of Sciences in the U.S., an intervention during the 20h news show on Gabon Television and written article in the press such as the journal l’Union. What can you tell us about that? Your disappearance from the landscape around this research project, or the "very educational" intervention of Professor El Albani on Gabonese Television.

I would first of all congratulate the Poitiers team for their excellent work published in PNAS, which still remains a global benchmark of very high level. This work has a significant impact within the global scientific community, and I'm simply proud of my younger sisters and countrymen, replacing me in Poitiers, and who have seized the notion of continuity and work at a very high level.

However, following last year’s publications, you already know that the reasons for my departure from Poitiers are purely unhealthy; I would not want to rehash them. If you want, you are free to go back to these statements to better inform the public. I have turned the page and I moved forward now that things seem to work.

If it pleases the Poitiers team to delete me from the landscape "in Gabon" I really do not care, but on top of that if the Gabonese authorities have not been sensitive to that, what can I do? The only way for me to turn the page, was to get out and move forward. A minimum of pride would have been nice for such an important discovery! Why would it always be Americans, Europeans, Asians, in summary others? Why not quote a Gabonese as the main actor in such a discovery some day in the world? When one mentions the name of Charles Darwin, today they can now put beside him the name of Professor El Albani (a French Researcher and pride of France), do you think that the name of Frantz OSSA OSSA (Gabonese Researcher and pride of Gabon) does not have its place there? Have the Gabonese people lost their pride? Or they never had it? Where is our sense of patriotism?

In July 2010, a version of the discovery was presented to the world media, if in 2013 , a new version of the discovery erasing me from the landscape was presented to the people through the Gabonese media, it is that those who are responsible for it consider the Gabonese people to be fools and stupid people, where any merchant or seller of illusion can come on the sly and peddle anything and assert themselves. What gave me the courage to move forward is international recognition marked by very prestigious collaborations with researchers at Caltech Institute, Yale University, University of California ... You can check their rankings among global universities to get an idea of what this can mean in terms of prestige. Besides, I just receive funding in the form of a three-month stay fully paid by Yale University in the USA in order to make advanced analysis and discuss some ongoing projects.

Well Frantz Ossa Ossa, speaking of the Gabonese People as duped and stupid, Brainforest had closely watched the " very bright and educational" intervention of Professor El Albani on the news show of 20h on Gabon Television, presented by Yves MINTOUMBA, which taught the Gabonese people a little bit about the history of the appearance of free oxygen in our atmosphere, explaining that there was no oxygen available before the great oxygenation event of early Proterozoic (around 2.3 billion years). To be franck, team Brainforest railed because our attention is also focused on the development of the facts in the scientific world and we know that several theories have contradicted this assumption, it is also the one of the main motivations of this interview; what do you think of this "brilliant pedagogical intervention " given to the people of Gabon?

I'm really surprised by the relevance of your question and I'll admit it to you.

But you know, I'm not going to reject everything that is done in Poitiers because I was trained there and because Poitiers is a great university. However, it is sometimes important to head out of politics and back into the swing of scientific news before coming to make this type of intervention on a public television channel, watched by a whole population and even across the world. There’s even a recently published article, last September in the prestigious journal Nature; the author is Sean Crowe of Denmark in collaboration with the Department of Geology at the University of Johannesburg where I am currently. This article demonstrates the existence of free oxygen in our planet 3 billion years ago. This means that free oxygen was present on the surface of the Earth about 700 million years before the period mentioned by Professor El Albani on Gabon Television.

You know, Yves MINTOUMBA is a journalist I like a lot, but how was he able to let this happen? Why did he not respond with a question to bring a little light and rectify the situation? Can you imagine this in an interview conducted by Christiane Amanpour on CNN and David Pujadas of France Television? What a disaster that would be!

Gabon has Great names nevertheless: Professor Leon Nzouba, Professor Daniel ONA Ondo, Professor Bertrand MBATCHI, Professor OWONO Nguema, Professor MINTSA, Professor Jacques LEBIBI, Professor KOMBILA, Professor Alain Ondo... the list goes on and on! You cannot come and say this kind of thing on TV, a little respect is needed. Why would Gabon be a country where any merchant on the sly can pretend to come sell their illusion? Why did Gabon Television air that? You know, to erase me from the landscape is nothing because such cases are common, but to hear such things on the public television channel of Gabon makes me very sad!

The Gabonese people are neither dupes nor stupid, and the time when we bought and cheered illusions is gone. Those who have not yet integrated this concept have nothing to do in Gabon and I have great hope that the new political vision of Gabon will take care of such cases!

Frantz Ossa Ossa this is a bit hard though especially toward your former thesis advisor!

You asked my opinion on that intervention on Gabon TV, so I have given you the depth of my thoughts. We live in a democracy and I am entitled to express my opinion especially when it is real and justified. It is important sometimes to head out of politics and return to science. You know when I was a Ph.D. student at Poitiers, whenever I failed; I was admonished to make me better. Why not respond to this type of intervention, especially when it is made by the man who lit fire under you for a good three years? I'm not pretentious but one must be careful before an intervention in public and especially when one is world famous. People can worry and ask questions as is the case of the brilliant team of Brainforest, true or false?

Frantz Ossa Ossa, Poitiers and Professor EL Albani have nevertheless stressed the publication of important work in the prestigious journal of the American Academy of Sciences, and you since 2010, nothing special? They can at least have the merit of making the headline news in Gabon right?

I praised that work as soon as it was published, and even at the beginning of this interview. This means that I am not at war nor in competition with anyone, and when something is right it should recognized when it is not good it must also be said.

An article of mine as first author was published in the prestigious journal Chemical Geology , a special volume dedicated to one of the greatest scientist in the field of geosciences who undoubtedly influenced the major theories of early Earth during the last 50 years, and died about two years ago. I am very proud to be among the privileged in the tribute is rendered to him by the world scientific community through this special volume. I frankly do not think to come for a media tour in Gabon just for that. I do not think I'll come sing from the rooftops in Gabon that I have two other articles that are in the process of being published in two prestigious scientific journals, because it is still very little relative to my goals. There are also other very confidential things I do not have the right to talk about here, but at the time of publication, I would be delighted to come to Gabon to talk about them if I am invited by the Gabonese media because the impact will be very important for the global scientific community.

A final question Frantz Ossa Ossa, when you went on the TV program Pluriel on Gabon Television in early 2012, you seemed to show things hidden by a cloth, which you presented as being of major importance. What has happened to these nowadays? Two years have passed but nothing has been heard.

I see that you have eyes and ears everywhere, and that nothing escapes you. Actually what was hidden under the fabric is of major importance to the scientific world and the discovery of fossils of Franceville. Fossils presented as multicellular organisms relatively large were found in Franceville by Frantz Ossa Ossa, El Albani and Paul Sardini through the orientation of Michel MBINA. Since then, three years have passed, but has someone tried to challenge one of the fundamental issues that have emerged around this important discovery, namely what types of multicellular organisms where they? What are the first complex creatures that have colonized our planet? I guess no one, because I check science news daily. Yet everyone was waiting for us around the corner on this fundamental issue.

But what you have seen covered under the fabric is in part a response to this fundamental question. A clearly identified species found on another very important site in the G2. I have done extensive research on these trace fossils in collaboration with a team of internationally recognized researchers. I presented this work to an important personality among Gabonese authorities who is sensitive to this issue. I know that they will read this interview and could contradict me if I tell falsehoods. But we nevertheless agreed on a fundamental point. The site where these new fossils are is vital to the economy of Gabon and is a flagship project for the future of our country. The decision was tough, but I could not stir up trouble around the site and challenge this important project which is a major milestone for the economy and the future of our country. Sometimes in life, you have to make compromises and determine your limits especially when things become vital. I just decided to abandon that work, however, which would have inducted me into the world scientific community. I preferred the interest of my country instead of thinking about me and my little being. I’ve never focused on what Gabon would give me as a reward, but rather what I can bring to my country to make it better, in my particular scale. I often borrow the expression of the famous former President John Kennedy, and many people can recognize here that this is a great value that Grand President taught all of mankind.

Thank you Frantz Ossa Ossa, a last word?

I am not at war with anyone, let alone in competition with anyone. I am proud to have been a student at the University of Poitiers and I learned a lot of things that certainly make me a good researcher today. I met many great people there and an important part of the story of my life has been written there. However, I would not accept that someone comes and talks about me or tells stories about my choices and the reasons of my departure from Poitiers, on Gabonese television and elsewhere because I would be pleased to broadcast all audio and video recordings since the beginning of this story in the Socoba site until I left Poitiers in July 2011. I've always been fascinated by electronics and new technologies, and with several gadgets one can do interesting things and all my colleagues in Poitiers did not ignore this passion. But from what I see, the thirst for glory has erased the memory of some people. Why not a public confrontation on a Gabonese television station? It would be a very good thing, and the public could hear these live recordings. Contrary to what some people may think, the Gabonese individual is neither a fool nor stupid.

And finally, Max Weber in his brilliant work “The Scholar and the Politics" put forth an important concept for humanity: “The Ethics of conviction and ethics of responsibility." In a country that has set its course towards being emerging, I took the position at my level and I always try to make my small contribution at my small scale. For that I have my models and my examples to follow : Professor Leon Nzouba, Professor Daniel ONA Ondo, Professor Bertrand MBATCHI, Professor OWONO Nguema, Professor MINTSA, Professor Jacques LEBIBI, Professor KOMBILA, Professor Alain Ondo, Marc Ona, among thousands more.

I cannot conclude without thanking the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, especially the Embassy of France in Gabon because it is through their work on the ground that many young hidden talents in Gabon have been identified and will always continue to be identified. Thank you.

Pourquoi Gabon Télévision a pu laisser passer ça ???

Merci.
