English Version

On July 17, 1851, Victor Hugo, the great French writer, armed only with his pen, refused the revision of the Constitution submitted to the vote of the Assembly by Louis Bonaparte to allow him to be re-elected President of the Republic. The eminent poet and writer published a sharp edged pamphlet in which he explains his refusal. He writes:

"After Napoleon the Great, I do not want to Napoleon the Small!" It will give the following title to a collection of poems against the dictatorship: " Natural and Necessary Tendencies of Napoleon the Little."

Dear readers, for daring to stand up against tyranny in his country and to the hereditary power which were rampant in the mid-19th century, Victor Hugo will be persecuted and forced to spend 20 years of his life in exile, away from his family.

Like Victor Hugo and others who only had their arguments and courage to oppose to the “omnipotent” hereditary dictatorship that seemed endless, the grouping of Indignants of Gabon, declared or not, stands, takes a stance to remind everyone that freedom is not threatened in Gabon; it has already been utterly destroyed and must be reconquered!

Dear readers, for this blog, the Forum of the Indignants of Gabon responds to the need to secure and fertilize the Gabonese human freedom and therefore impede the conditioning within which the Bongo regime would like to continue to lock them. That forum contributes to the background work which suggests that freedom is obtained from struggle, awareness and knowledge of self. Indeed for the Bongo regime, there can be no freedom but the one that is declared by them, within their prescribed perimeters and parameters. This somewhat peculiar freedom that the regime imposes on the Gabonese people, is one that promotes permissiveness and debauchery. Those who like the Indignants of Gabon, want a social moral and political code that is tangible in the country, are subject to demonization and discredit. Simply put, in the Bongos’ Gabon, freedom boils down to what is decided by the powers that be. Period!

Like Victor Hugo who said that he did not want Napoleon the small, the Indignants of Gabon are saying that they do not want Bongo the son in place of Bongo the father. Just like Victor Hugo, they do not want to enroll in this hereditary and disastrous logic for our country. To all those who respond that their efforts are only theological sermons, wishful thinking, the indignants reply that the reality is that a human being, even in Gabon, can be said to be free to the extent that nothing compels them to do anything and that this goal is noble and achievable by whomever has courage and endurance. For the Indignants of Gabon, freedom is a value because it is a conquest and is ill-suited for falsehood.

In his pamphlet: "Napoleon the Small" Victor Hugo wrote:

What can he do? All
What does he do? Nothing
With this full power
In eight months a man of genius
Would had changed the face of France
Europe may be.
But then, he took France
And do not do anything with it.
God knows that the President is busy:
He rages, he touches everything, he runs after projects;
Because he cannot create, he decrees, he seeks
To counter his nullity; the consequence is
Perpetual motion, but alas!
This wheel is running on empty.

The man who, after seizing power
Married a foreign princess
Is an advantageous careerist.
He loves vanity, glitz, big words,
What sounds, what shines, all the trappings of power.
He has money going for him, premiums, banks, stock exchange, safe.
He has quirks, he must satisfy them.
When one measures the man and finds him so small
and then measures success and finds it enormous
it is impossible that the mind does not experience a few surprises.
We will add cynicism to that, because France, he tramples on it,
He laughs at it, he braves it, denies it, insults it and mocks it!

Sad sight is the gallop through the absurd,
Of a mediocre man going at full speed!

Dear readers, you will have no trouble recognizing that these lines are absolutely applicable to Ali Bongo. One would think that two centuries ago, Hugo was describing his small majesty of Gabon.

il fait rage, il touche à tout , il court après les projets;
