English version

Dear readers, you are probably asking why we would pay attention to such foolishness from press outlets that have long lost credibility and that no one with any kind of sense would listen to. You would be right of course. But in Gabon, a lot of people do not have access to proper information and are totally prisoners of the national government own media which day in and day out, tell them that their leader, albeit illegitimate, can do no wrong and the entire world is at its feet; which of course is total bull crap but if a lie is repeated a thousand time, people start to believe it. This is why it is important that every time the Bongos propaganda machine is caught in a lie, people of good will need to make sure to highlight that lie and explain to people that they are being sold a bill of goods not worth a bucket of warm spit.

For a long time, being a true journalist in Gabon has been extremely difficult if not impossible. Only very few people can be called true journalists. Some of those who tried to tell the truth have ended up dead in mysterious conditions; others have been jailed and harassed numerous times. However, if a journalist is willing to do and say what the Bongos want, then his or her career will prosper. That’s the deal the Gabonese press has to make. The truth and facts are often sacrificed for the sake of “preserving my job” and “to avoid angering the regime.” In Gabon, a journalist is taught that his main mission is to be loyal first and foremost to the president and his family and to their party. That’s means that the Bongos who have instituted what is for all intents and purposes a monarchy in Gabon, are always right, they are always fantastically brilliant and their wishes and decisions are always for the greater good. In the Gabonese public media paid for by the taxpayers, the Bongos are above any form of criticism. When was the last time anyone read an article in a public newspaper or saw a program on public television that criticized the people in power? Not only are journalists and editors banned from criticizing the Bongos, they are also prohibited from publishing any material that may, God forbid, be interpreted as “offensive” to His Excellency, His Majesty, the Raïs, the distinguished comrade etc.

The official media in Gabon is under the total control of the Ministry of communication, which appoints editors and journalists, and pays their salaries. It also provides money for the print media. In this system, there has never been room for freedom of expression and there will never be. The media exist to only serve as a mouthpiece for the ruler, his family and close friends. There is almost a competition among journalists to outdo each other on who can best flatter the Bongos. On Thursday, the anchor of the nightly news on the most important TV channel in Gabon, RTG1, Patrick Simangoye, took lying in the name of stupid flattery to a new level when a declared, without shame, that Ali Bongo was the most consulted leader in the world at the current session of the United Nations taking place in New-York. For Patrick Simangoye, when it comes to word affairs, all the leaders on the planet are knocking on Ali Bongo’s door so they could benefit from his incomparable wisdom!
-When leaders want to know what to do about Afghanistan, apparently they do not need to talk to Amid Karzai or Barack Obama; they go to Ali Bongo.
-When leaders want to know what to do about the world economic crisis, apparently they do not need to talk to Angela Merkel or Cameron, or the Chinese delegation; no, no and no, they go to Ali Bongo for crisp answers.
-When leaders want to find a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian impasse, do they talk to Netanyahu or Abbas? They do not need to; they just go to Ali Bongo for their answers.

It is clear to anybody with a brain that these Gabonese journalists saying these crazy things are absolutely not concerned at all about informing the public, but only about flattering who they think wants to hear these stupid lies. To preserve their positions and their livelihood, these journalists are willing to overlook the ruthless corruption that is crippling Gabon as they continue to insanely pretend that Ali Bongo is an important world leader, a status that is absolutely and ridiculously false. When faced with such consistently ridiculous performances by the Gabonese public media, one is not sure whether to laugh out loud take offense or express outrage at such a brazenly impudent attempt to lie to the people by insulting their intelligence. When watching RTG1, one is always reminded to be witnessing ignorance and stupidity in action.

So goes Gabon
